PARKERSBURG - Local organizations that help women and children in crisis, assist children of all ages in learning and work to improve the quality of life in their communities were awarded nearly $147,000 in grants Tuesday by the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.

The 2014 spring grants announced Tuesday at the Our Community's Foundation office in Parkersburg were among $203,555 bestowed through the Spring Community Action Grants program through the foundation, which includes the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and the regional affiliate foundations of Doddridge, Jackson, Mason and Ritchie counties and the Little Kanawha area.
Recipients came from an 11-county area: Wood, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Jackson, Mason, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane and Wirt counties in West Virginia and Washington County, Ohio.

"It was an enjoyment reading everybody's grants and seeing the different projects," said Cynthia Brown, co-chairwoman of the grants committee.
